2021 SPEAKERS
Amanda Parrish Block
Amanda Parrish Block was born and raised in Summit, NJ. Growing up during a time when organizations like Bridges, Family Promise, and SHIP were just starting, she grew up with a sense that a healthy community is one where that embraces and protects the humanity of all of its members. During college, Amanda learned about community organizing and how social systems can reduce poverty during her internships at the White House and the State Department.
In 2001 New York Junior League’s volunteers inspired her to join their ranks after she spearheaded their centennial public relations campaign. From volunteer commitments at the NYJL she learned about the key agencies and programs that support and empower New York City’s most vulnerable residents. Her Junior League commitments prepared her to open the community outreach office for NYC’s street homeless and underserved at Washington Square United Methodist Church in 2003. It was there she created the acclaimed “street sheets” which were a series of ten booklets for food, hygiene, medical, legal, housing, and job skills training services available to anyone in need and without referral.
Nearly ten years ago Amanda returned to Summit with her family. She resumed her dedication to Bridges where she spent many hours volunteering in high school. The year after she served Bridges Board as its Chair and the Junior League of Summit as its Community Vice President, Amanda studied poverty among working poor households in Summit. She established GRACE in 2016 to marshal Summit’s resources to increase the quality of life for all of Summit’s community members.
Since the COVID-related shutdown from the spring of 2020, GRACE has grown more than 500%. The organization now serves 450-500 families each week with nutrient dense food, personal and household supplies. GRACE offers parallel programming during distribution to enhance the well being, resilience, and stability of the households that come to GRACE in need. The organization and its partners offer seminars on nutrition, tenants rights, education, and immigration; medical and benefits screenings, and STEAM and arts enrichment.
From her work with Amanda has received several accolades. The New York Junior League named her a Rising Star in 2005. The YMCA of Greater New York honored Amanda in 2012 for her advocacy for New York City’s homeless. Shaping Summit Together named her Keeper of the Dream at the 2017 Martin Luther King Jr. Day of Service. The Boy Scouts Patriots’ Path Council awarded her the Woman of Excellence Award in 2017. The Summit Junior League named her Volunteer of the Year in 2017 and then named an annual grant, the Amanda Parrish Block grant for Community Essentials, in 2018. In 2021 she was a Russ Berrie nominee and named a Union County Shero for GRACE’s contributions during the pandemic.
