Keynote Address: The Collaboration Imperative
Vicki Floyd Clark, Consultant, Building the Capacity of Organizations, Memphis, TN
The Collaboration Imperative is based on work from Dr. James Austin, Harvard Business School and the Drucker Foundation. In these complex times, when no organization can succeed alone, nonprofits, businesses and government entities are embracing collaboration for mutual benefits. Nonprofits are partnering with businesses to further their missions, develop resources, strengthen programs, and thrive in the competitive world. Companies are also discovering that alliances with nonprofits generate significant rewards: increased customer preference, improved employee morale, greater brand identity, stronger corporate culture, and higher innovation. This session will include the following strategies for more effective partnership development:

Electives
All of our programs fall into one or more of four categories. For those participants who are looking to create a custom agenda based upon certain tracks, please note the categorizations in parentheses next to the program name. The four categories are:
Advocacy for Nonprofits: Engagement and Restrictions for New Jersey Nonprofit Entities (Governance & Strategic Thinking; Communications & Marketing)
Paul Rozenberg, Esq.
Advocacy is a core tenet of nonprofit management. It is critical that nonprofit board members advocate for the organization’s mission both internally and externally. However, knowing the appropriate reach of this advocacy can be challenging. This course will discuss how to effectively engage in the legislative process in New Jersey with both the Legislative and Executive Branches of the State government. We will also examine the interplay between this important advocacy work and the restrictions imposed by New Jersey's lobbying rules and the IRS.
Building the Strategic Board (Governance & Strategic Thinking; Membership & Leadership)
Anne Dalton, Chief League Operations Officer, Association of Junior Leagues International, Inc.
Today’s nonprofit boards more than ever before are being looked to assure both accountability and impact. This requires a highly effective leadership development and nominating process that is focused on identifying the critical characteristics of success and building a deep leadership pipeline of people from which to recruit. It is both art and science. This workshop will explore the elements of a strategic nominating process.
By the Numbers - Financial Futures begin at the Board Level (Finance; Governance & Strategic Thinking)
Christina Goulding, Managing Director, Seelaus Asset Management
This workshop will focus on engaging all Board members in the financial future of their organization, overview the basics of an Endowment process, spotlight the role of Treasurer and discuss market trends around Impact & Diversity investing. Participants will take away engagement strategies to use with their organizations, learn leadership tools applicable to finance-related board positions and gain greater insight into securing their organization’s financial future. Prior finance experience not required, this workshop is for all current and future Board members!
Disagreement without Angst: Creating a Culture of Constructive Discussion, Dissent, and Dialogue (Communication; Governance & Strategic Thinking)
Dr. Karen Rezach, The Ethics Institute, Kent Place School, Summit NJ
How do we create a Board culture that encourages disagreement without angst - where “dissent” is not viewed as an “attack,” but rather a vehicle to achieving the mission of the organization? How do we deal with people who find probing questions as a potential attack on their ideas? What type of approach can be utilized to create civil dialogue and ethical debate at committee and board levels? Discover methods to create a culture of discussion, dissent and dialogue, and experience an ethical approach to discerning issues that will help your Board achieve the mission of your organization.
Diversity & Inclusion (Membership & Leadership)
Jackie Jordan-Davis, Workplace Coaches
What if your organization could mobilize a “super power” to create a climate that moved the needle faster and farther in implementing your mission? Successful diversity and inclusion practices are valuable tools that can help accelerate organizational innovation; improve employee engagement and morale; reduce turnover; and build a sense of community and
belonging at work. During this session participants will:
● Review a summary of research findings about diversity and inclusion practices in today’s workplace
● Examine common scenarios where the concept of diversity and inclusion is challenged, and the specific tactics both managers and peers can use to ensure that no individual is unfairly excluded, marginalized, or silenced
● Explore specific ways that diversity and inclusion practices can be leveraged to improve organizational performance and strengthen the quality of life at work
Grant Writing Basics: How to Craft a Winning Proposal and Select Your Best Prospects (Communications; Finance)
John W. Hicks, CFRE, Principal, DLBHICKS LLC, New York, NY and Vernon, NJ
Grant writing can be intimidating. In this session, you will learn how to easily craft the basics of a solid proposal designed to help you win a grant. You will also learn how and where to find grant funding opportunities.
Marketing Boot camp 2.0 (Communication)
Sally Glick, Principal & Chief Growth Strategist, Sobel & Co. LLC, Livingston, NJ
In this session we will take the generic concepts that comprise a nonprofit marketing branding and marketing communication strategy and use those as building blocks for each participant to create a plan for their organization. The theory of marketing will be replaced by the reality of marketing – including situations where there are limited resources to accomplish the goals of the group. Attendees will roll up their sleeves during this interactive presentation and will leave the session with an actionable plan.
Mission Driven Volunteer Engagement (Governance & Strategic Thinking; Membership & Leadership)
Vicki Floyd Clark, Consultant, Building the Capacity of Organizations, Memphis, TN
Could your nonprofit achieve its mission without volunteers? For most nonprofits, the answer is “No.” With limited resources and tight budgets, most charitable organizations depend on volunteers. Therefore, doesn’t it make sense to actively engage your volunteers? For most nonprofits, the problem isn’t getting volunteers…it’s keeping them. Volunteers want to feel needed, appreciated, and (most importantly) that they’re making a difference. With so many participants, meeting the expectations of every volunteer can be challenging. For any organization that relies on volunteers to accomplish their mission, recruitment of volunteers is only the first step. The big question is how to keep the volunteers you’ve recruited active, engaged and totally committed to the cause. This session presents the Volunteer Engagement Cycle and the top 6 ways to keep volunteers engaged.
Navigating Change (Governance & Strategic Thinking; Communications & Marketing; Membership & Leadership)
Vicki Floyd Clark, Consultant, Building the Capacity of Organizations, Memphis, TN
It is a truism that the only constant is change. As William Bridges says in his book Managing Transitions, “it's all change as far as the eye can see.” Change can overwhelm the most organized of leaders and turn the calm, intentional vision of an organization into a chaotic mess. At the same time, the energy involved in change is profound, and opportunities for creativity and improvement abound. Session will also introduce the work of John Kotter, from “Our Iceberg Is Melting”. This deep dive session will address strategies for dealing proactively with change and transition. Participants will learn:
Non-Profit Human Resource Management 101 (Governance & Strategic Thinking; Membership & Leadership)
Marissa Ruggerio, Esq.
As a member of a non-profit board, a baseline understanding of both human resource management and employment law is crucial. This workshop will focus on the basics any board member should know, including an introduction to federal and NJ employment laws and HR compliance with those laws. No prior employment law experience or HR knowledge required!
Public Speaking (Communications)
Rana Shanawani, Coach for Own the Room | Executive Director of the Women's Center for Entrepreneurship
This workshop will help you become stronger ambassadors to speak publicly about your cause, whether that's one-on-one, or in front of groups. Learn how to reduce weak language, evoke emotion, confidently tell a powerful story, and connect with your audience.
