2018 Curriculum and Workshop Descriptions
(2019 Curriculum and Workshop Descriptions to be Announced Soon)
Keynote Session
Susan Danish, Executive Director, The Association of Junior Leagues International, Inc.
What You Say is Hurting Your Cause
If you have ever said or written the phrases “social safety net,” “at-risk youth,” “the most vulnerable in our society” or even shared individual success stories, you are actually hurting your organization. Learn to reframe your story for greater understanding and impact. Susan Danish will share how organizations are using a new, evidence-based framework to do just that.
Core Curriculum
(Suggested for those who have not yet participated in Get On Board, and required for those interested in Get On Board matching program)
1. Finance 101
Jodi Schruenbrand, National VP-Finance, Kappa Delta Sorority
This workshop will provide accessible financial basics for non-treasurers. The program will cover topics such as understanding budget variance reports, balance sheets and other financial statements; developing, approving and maintaining a "healthy" budget that is consistent with your organization's mission and goals; and working as a tax exempt organization.
2. Board Roles and Responsibilities
Colleen Markley and Laura Magedoff, Junior League of Summit, NJ and State Council of Junior Leagues of NJ Training Chairs
What does saying “yes” to be a board member really mean? Review the legal requirements and practical applications of the roles, responsibilities and duties of board members. You will understand the three duties that legally bind you as a board member, the ten basic board responsibilities determined by Board Source and other best practice organizations, and an understanding of Governance and Management decision-making, along with mission-based servant leadership.
Morning Electives:
Public Speaking
Rana Shanawani, Coach for Own the Room | Executive Director of the Women's Center for Entrepreneurship
This workshop will help you become stronger ambassadors to speak publicly about your cause, whether that's one-on-one, or in front of groups. Learn how to reduce weak language, evoke emotion, confidently tell a powerful story, and connect with your audience.
Taking the Fear Out of Fundraising: How to Engage Everyone on Your Team
Amy Einstein, ACFRE, Certified Master Trainer
Fundraising can seem like a nightmare, especially if you don’t know how to get started, or if you’re the only one doing all the work. Fundraising doesn’t need to be scary. It should be joyful and even fun! Join Amy Eisenstein to learn how to put the fun back in fundraising, as well as engage board members and volunteers.
Ethics, Dissent, and Board Communication
Dr. Karen Rezach, The Ethics Institute, Kent Place School, Summit NJ
In a world where diversified views can sometimes be a challenge, how do we communicate with respect and understanding? How can we engage in civil discourse? How do we use active listening so that we can better appreciate that there isn’t always a right and wrong in each issue, but perhaps an ethical dilemma that involves a “right vs right?” Understand how it is our obligation to the board and mission to create a culture of discussion, dissent, and exploration, and experience an ethical approach to discerning issues that will help us to create just that.
Marketing Strategies for Nonprofit Organizations
Sally Glick, Principal & Chief Growth Strategist, Sobel & Co. LLC, Livingston, NJ
This session will focus on the ever-increasing impact of philanthropy on the nonprofit world and how private fundraising continues to evolve in a rapidly changing society. We will discuss generational giving, technology trends and techniques that can be immediately used to enhance and increase current and planned fundraising efforts.
Reframing 101
Susan Danish, Executive Director, Association of Junior Leagues International, Inc.
In this workshop, Susan Danish will take the principles discussed over breakfast and lead participants through the steps to create their own, reframed narrative for the nonprofit they volunteer for, work for or on whose board they serve. Participants will use a four-step process to learn how to re-frame for greater impact and leave with the tools and resources to do more.
Self-Reflective Leadership: Unpacking Race & Exploring Identity
Tashiah Singleton, Learning Programs Manager, Education Pioneers
All things are rooted in personal experiences. We all have biases - the questions is, do we recognize when our biases marginalize others? What happens when our actions do not match our values or when we’re in conflict with our beliefs?
The individual journey towards self-awareness provides a platform for a more just society. By exploring race, identity and privilege, this workshop will take a self-reflective approach, helping participants deepen their understanding of individual impact as advocates for communities and families across various systems, organizations and agencies.
Pre-requisite: Vulnerability and Openness
