FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
Who is eligible to participate in Get On Board?
Anyone (male or female) age 18 and older who would like to attend training for nonprofit board experience. The program is open to both New Jersey and non-New Jersey residents.
Do I need to be on a Board now to attend Get On Board?
No! While we do have more advanced electives available for those with more experience who wish to continue their training, a portion of program is specifically designed for those with little or no board experience. Our hope is that we will help provide you with tools that will allow you to be a valuable contributor to a nonprofit organization. In fact, whether you are interested in joining a board now or as part of your long-term plans, this can help you take the next step toward that goal.
Can we send all of our Board members?
Yes. We encourage organizations to send some or all of their board members to the training. By sending more than one member, you can ensure coverage at all of the breakout sessions, enabling your Board to obtain the benefit of all of the Get On Board faculty.
Who developed the curriculum for Get On Board?
The State Council of the Junior Leagues of New Jersey created the curriculum using a consortium of ideas, including Board Source, philanthropic ideology, existing programs from other Junior League training programs across the country, other educational institutions, and future-focused research from experts in the nonprofit world. Once a draft curriculum was devised, it was shared with a dozen nonprofits in New Jersey for their review and input, to make sure that graduates of the program would come to their organizations ready to hit the ground running.
How long is the program?
Get On Board is a one-day boot camp. Breakfast and registration typically begins at 8 a.m. with the day wrapping up around 4 p.m. The program includes breakfast, lunch, and afternoon refreshments.
Is the program the same every year?
There is a core curriculum of basic information that is offered every year. Completion of the core curriculum is required to be matched with our matching partners. For individuals who have completed that part of the program, there are other new electives offered every year to encourage continuing education as a nonprofit board member and/or volunteer.
What are the required core curriculum workshops?
1. Board Member Roles and Responsibilities
2. Finance 101: Budget, finance and investment plans and best practices
What are the elective workshops?
You can see a selection of past workshops by visiting our descriptions from 2017 and 2018 .
How does the matching program work?
Get On Board keeps a database of individuals who have completed the training program who may be interested in being matched with a nonprofit. Individuals will fill out a short questionnaire to provide a sense of what types of nonprofits they are interested in. Get On Board will provide that information to nonprofits who are interested in interviewing new members for their volunteer programs and boards of trustees/directors. Get On Board acts as an intermediary and communication facilitator and does not endorse specific individuals or non-profits. Our lawyers told us to say that.
How can my organization obtain trained directors?
There are two facets to the Get On Board program. The first is to train current and prospective board members. The other is to try to help facilitate a match to organizations in need of potential members. If your organization is looking for new potential volunteers and board members, please fill out this questionnaire. We will request some brief information about your organization to get a sense of who might be the best fit for your organization. We do not promise that we will be able to fill the spot, nor do we make any representations about the individuals. We only are putting you in touch with individuals who have expressed interest in volunteering and completed the requisite Get On Board courses. Again, those pesky lawyers.
What does Get On Board cost?
Registration is $175 per person. Discounts are available. Cost should never be a reason for someone not to attend the Get On Board program, as the mission is to help train as many people as possible in nonprofit excellence. Please contact us with further questions at GetOnBoardNJ@gmail.com
