Curriculum and Workshop Descriptions
Welcome Session
The Mission-Driven Board Meets Servant Leadership
Vicki Clark, Building the Capacity of Organizations, Memphis, TN
The Get On Board Welcome Session will re-energize your dedication to the mission of your organization and the impact that mission has on board decision-making. Servant leadership is a philosophy and set of practices that enriches the lives of individuals, builds better organizations and ultimately creates a more just and caring world. The servant-leader serves others, rather than others serving the leader. There is great congruence between Servant Leadership and the governing role of leaders on nonprofit boards.
Core Curriculum
(Suggested for those who have not yet participated in GOB, and required for those wishing to obtain a GOB certificate)
1. Board Roles and Responsibilities
Colleen Markley and Laura Magedoff, Junior League of Summit, NJ and State Council of Junior Leagues of NJ Training Chairs
In this workshop, Colleen and Laura will review the legal requirements and practical applications of the roles, responsibilities and duties of board members. You will understand the three duties that legally bind you as a board member, the ten basic board responsibilities determined by Board Source and other best practice organizations, and an understanding of Governance and Management decision-making.
2. Finance 101
Matthew Schwartz, Partner, Bederson Accounting LLP, West Orange, NJ
This workshop will provide accessible financial basics for non-treasurers. The program will cover topics such as understanding budget variance reports, balance sheets and other financial statements; developing, approving and maintaining a "healthy" budget that is consistent with your organization's mission and goals; and working as a tax exempt organization.
Keynote Address/Lunch
Team Building and Inspiring Others to Lead and Perform: LOVE EM OR LOSE EM
Vicki Clark, Building the Capacity of Organizations, Memphis, TN
Building a mission driven, dynamic team of volunteers is essential to the success of your organization. Who’s on your team? How did they get there? Do you recognize volunteers as “customers”. Now more than ever, attracting and engaging volunteers requires considering their needs and never taking them for granted. This session will help you think strategically about your organization’s relationship with volunteers, including trends in volunteering, what motivates volunteers, and how a bit of “customer service” can help you keep them engaged.
Electives
1. Risk Management: Facts, Figures, and Stories from the Trenches Gary Nissenbaum, Attorney and Managing Principal, Nissenbaum Law Group, LLC, Union, NJ; and Matthew Schwartz, Partner, Bederson Accounting LLP, West Orange, NJ
Everyone knows the horror stories: embezzlement, organizational failures, erroneous tax filings, security breaches and other large-scale events. This workshop will provide risk management best practices for nonprofit organizations, including evaluating and addressing ethics and conflicts of interest; establishing proper checks and balances; and addressing insurance, tax and corporate governance issues. Our esteemed panelists will provide pointers as well as illustrative anecdotes of what can go wrong when "no one is looking."
2. Marketing Strategies for Nonprofit Organizations.
Sally Glick, Principal & Chief Growth Strategist, Sobel & Co. LLC, Livingston, NJ
This session will focus on the ever-increasing impact of philanthropy on the nonprofit world and how private fundraising continues to evolve in a rapidly changing society. We will discuss generational giving, technology trends and techniques that can be immediately used to enhance and increase current and planned fundraising efforts.
3. The Marketing Vista: Developing and (Re) Developing a Brand: Creating Greater Brand Awareness for The Junior League, A Case Study
Laurie Dodge, Director of Marketing & Development and
Michelle Gorenstein, Creative Director, The Association of Junior Leagues International, New York, NY.
Laurie and Michelle will provide a glimpse into their work exploring the challenges, opportunities and land of possibilities as they, alongside a task force of Junior League members, charted a course to create greater brand awareness for The Junior League, a 115-year-old organization beset by misperceptions and lack of awareness, in an exceptionally competitive marketplace. Junior League members and local nonprofits leaders alike will glean valuable insights to take back to their own organizations.
4. The Nuts and Bolts of Managing a Committee
Colleen Markley, Junior League of Summit, NJ and New Jersey Council of Junior Leagues Training Chair
An exploration and discussion in how to engage your committee members, delegate responsibilities, foster new leaders, promote staff and board relationships, build and manage a team, develop volunteers, and how to make meetings work.
5. Diversity, Inclusion and Cultural Competence
Vicki Clark, Building the Capacity of Organizations, Memphis, TN
“The more diverse you are, the better off you are.” Ken Blanchard
The world is changing! Communities and community leaders are challenged by issues related to diversity, inclusion and cultural competence. Diversity and inclusiveness in nonprofit organizations is particularly important when the primary business is people serving people. This session will reflect on our individual and organizational progress and commitment to building more inclusive environments. Each new level of insight can result in growth and new experiences for individuals and agencies. The best work in this area requires commitment from board and staff leaders to support continuous efforts to address community wide and organizational challenges.
6. GOB matching: Next Steps to Board Involvement
Laura Magedoff, Junior League of Summit, Summit, NJ
This session will discuss the GOB matching process to attendees who are interested in being introduced to volunteer opportunities at nonprofit organizations. The matching program is designed to help graduates of the program find nonprofits in need of trustees and volunteers, and to help organizations in need of help identify trained, interested members. This workshop will explain the process and provide attendees with an opportunity to complete paperwork to enroll on site.
7. Philanthropy and Fundraising, Today and Tomorrow
Vicki Bixel, Semple Bixel Associates, Inc. Nutley, NJ
This session will focus on the ever increasing impact of philanthropy on the nonprofit world and how private fundraising continues to evolve in a rapidly changing society. We will discuss generational giving, technology trends and techniques that can be immediately used to enhance and increase current and planned fundraising efforts.
8. Birkman Personality and Career Assessment
Karen Henning, Founder/CEO CareerScape, Plano, TX, Birkman Method Certified Consultant
Birkman is a program that allows trainees to identify their strengths and weaknesses in depth. The analysis provides a platform for self-improvement and also allows trainees to better understand the group dynamics to enchant the ability of a board to work together. This course requires participants to take the personality assessment online ahead of Get On Board so they may fully experience the workshop with meaningful individual insights. The additional costs associated with this testing are INCLUDED in all registrations.
9. Utilizing Membership Engagement to Drive the Organization's Mission:
A Case Study from The Museum of Modern Art
Laura McGuinness, Acting Director of Membership, The Museum of Modern Art, New York, NY
Museum membership is not just about exclusive access and benefits. Members provide essential support for a cultural institution through their donations and involvement. This program will provide an overview of strategic insights and marketing programs that can help drive strong membership acquisition, retention and engagement, and look for opportunities to apply these lessons across the nonprofit spectrum. We will discuss thoughtful ways of making membership programs that inspire members to invest in your mission, and in turn developing programming that reflects what members are feeling.
10. The 14 Attributes of a Thriving Nonprofit
Joan Garry, Joan Garry Consulting, Montclair, New Jersey
What the best nonprofit organizations are doing right. Joan’s hope is this will inspire you and set an aspirational vision. Maybe your nonprofit does a bunch of these really well, but we all have something to work on. These 14 indicators are not the sole purview of a large, well-funded organization. This is applicable to any size organization and Joan will talk about the real resources you need to thrive.
